Question about Open Baffle project.

Postby gvimhoof » Mon Sep 14, 2009 3:42 am

Greetings!

I have a question of ignorance. I'm building a two-way Open Baffle speaker with
a large 15 inch woofer on the bottom based on the Martin King passive two-way
projects I found on-line. When laying out the placement for the woofer, I
centered it 10 in from the bottom. My question is do I leave the bottom of the
H-frame open to the floor? If I close it off to keep the 16 inch opening the
bottom of the H-Frame will be off the floor and that seems counter-intuitive to
me.

Cordially,
Graf

I've never built an open baffle system, so I could be totally wrong... But, thought the idea was to make a large baffle (relative to wavelength). This is because you need there is a long "path" for the sound waves to travel front-to-back, and any "holes" in the baffle create a short-cut , allowing the out-of-phase waves to combine, which reduces the output.

I had forgotten that I had posted this question on here! Thanks for the reply. I have finished these and I am V-E-R-Y happy with the results :D ! I had some friends from work come over and critique them for objective opinions and got nothing but positive reviews. Currently listening to Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here and everything is definitely there.

I tried to upload a photo but the file was too large. I hope this link works: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=399009869&albumId=1723689
